Bryce Harper Contract Rumors: Will Harper sign by August 16 deadline?

By Allan

According to a baseball source close to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, number one overall pick Bryce Harper has enrolled in classes at the College of Sourthern Nevada, and met the school’s new coach, Chris Sheff. Ladson says that this doesn’t mean that Harper will not sign with the Washington Nationals.

The team and Harper have until August 16 to get a deal done or Harper can go back to college. The source says that the negotiations between the Nats and the Scott Boras client are expected to heat up by Tuesday.

“I’m not going to discuss our negotiations other than to say we are in negotiations with all of our unsigned Draft choices,” GM Mike Rizzo said.

Late last month, we heard that Harper may have been creating leverage by negotiating his signing bonus through Facebook. Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post says that Boras has had a history of creating leverage for his negotiations in unique ways. Last year, Boras said Stephen Strasburg could play a season in Japan before entering the Majors as a free agent. Strasburg eventually signed with the Nationals before the deadline.
