According to a Major League source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports, one American League team has claimed Boston Red Sox pitcher Jonathan Papelbon on waivers. The identity of this team is not known, but it’s likely that the Red Sox will pull back Papelbon and making him ineligible to trade in August.
The Red Sox are 6 1/2 games out of first place, and have a crucial four game series with the Yankees this weekend, so it would be foolish to trade their closer right now.
Papelbon is owed roughly $3.2 million for this year, and is still under club control through salary arbitration for one more season. Rosenthal says the Red Sox could trade the closer this winter to open up the closer’s role for a more affordable right-handed pitcher such as Daniel Bard.
