Rumors for August, 2010

There is about 85 hours left before players have to be on a roster to be eligible for the playoffs meaning teams are looking for last minute additions. What do you do if your the GM of a team that is 51-78, 26 games back in their division and has the 4th worst record in all of baseball? If your Diamondbacks GM Jerry Dipoto, you probably don’t make anymore trades. “There’s still a chance,” Dipoto said, “but I wouldn’t qualify it as likely.”

If a trade is completed, it might involve Adam LaRoche who has already cleared waivers meaning he can be traded at any time. But the Diamondbacks in recent days have offered an extension to LaRoche, the specifics of which are not known. The Diamondbacks seem to be trying to keep LaRoche for 2011 at a price they’re comfortable with or trade him if they can’t. LaRoche has a $7.5 million mutual option for 2011 with a $1.5 million buyout.

The D-backs are also looking towards next year and view Kelly Johnson as part of their future as they are telling teams they will not trade him. It is unclear if he has cleared waivers.

If the D-backs do not make anymore trades, they will have traded away Chris Snyder, Edwin Jackson, Conor Jackson, Chad Qualls and Dan Haren.

The trade that I believe that benefited them the most was the Edwin Jackson for Daniel Hudson. They will have Hudson under control for longer and he has been pitching excellent since coming over the the National League (3-1 1.72 ERA for Hudson vs 6-10 5.16 ERA for Jackson- NL numbers).

Out of the trades the D-backs made this season, which one do you think will benefit them most in the long run?

Information from Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic was used in this article.

Jhonny Peralta has been with the Detroit Tigers for less than one month, and he’s already to eager to stay another year with the team, according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press.

“I want to be here,” Peralta said. “I hope they pick up the option. But I want to be here. I like everybody here.”

The ball is in the Tigers’ court with Peralta’s $7 million club option for 2011, and they may do that given what the team has seen in the month that Peralta has been in town. The 28-year-old infielder has hit six home runs in a Tigers’ uniform, and in his career he has had three seasons of at least 20 home runs, so he’s capable of providing the offensive pop that the Tigers desperately need.
Entering Friday’s game, Peralta was hitting .244/.310/.405. He’s making $4.6 million this season in the final season of his five-year contract.

8/28 01:48: Chapman was clocked at 105 mph while striking out three batters at Triple-A on Friday night, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

8/18 18:55: Left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman may be up in the Majors within the next couple of weeks, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

“We’re going to have to wait until Sept. 1,” Walt Jocketty said. “That will give him a chance to stabilize in the bullpen and get more experience. We’re trying to find the right time.”

The Cuban phenom has been lights-out at  Triple-A. Earlier this month he was clocked at 103 mph – twice, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

“He’s throwing great,” Jocketty added.

Chapman can be called up after the August 31st and still be eligible to be on the playoff roster because the team has two players on the 60-day disabled list and Chapman would essentially substitute for them. A player on the 60-day disabled list may be replaced by another player from the team’s 40-man roster who plays the same position. Read More→

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports had an interesting tweet this evening, “Overbay left #Jays game. Source says there has been trade interest lately. Stay tuned.”

Could the Toronto Blue Jays be working on a trade involving Lyle Overbay? Overbay cleared waivers earlier this month, so the Blue Jay are free to negotiate with other teams regarding a trade. Morosi previously said that he would be a good fit for the Tampa Bay Rays, but now that the team signed Brad Hawpe, they may not have a need for Overbay’s bat.

Heading into today’s game, Overbay was hitting .248/.355/.430 with 16 home runs and 56 RBIs. He’s being paid $7 million for the 2010 season, so any team that acquires him now will be responsible for about $1 million. He’ll be a free agent after this year.

In Joe Girardi’s first appearance in Chicago since Lou Piniella stepped down from his position as the Cubs’ manager, the native from Peoria, IL, fielded questions from the media in regards to the possibility of him managing the Cubbies. The New York Yankees are in town to face the White Sox.

“I’m going to talk about it for a few minutes today and that’s going to be it,” Girardi said via Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. “As I’ve said all along, my responsibility is to the Yankees. I was hired by the Yankees to do a job, we’re in a division race – a very tight division race – and my job is to prepare this team to play every day. That’s what I’m focusing on.

“My faith has always been extremely important to me. I’ve never worried about next year. I’m happy with my contract situation, I feel I’m fortunate to be one of 30 managers with a contract right now managing in the big-leagues. There are people in this organization that have done a lot more for this organization than I have that don’t have contracts. We’re not worried about it for next year. I’m worried about right now.” Read More→

Earlier this month, a Mets source close to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News said the Mets are willing to engage in negotiations with infielder Jose Reyes about a contract extension in lieu of exercising the option. Yesterday, Reyes confirmed his desire to be with the Mets long-term.

“I want to be here,” Reyes said on Thursday to the New York Daily News.

Still, the shortstop is happy as a Met. “I love it here,” he said. “My family is here, I love (living) on Long Island, I want to stay.”

League sources said the parties have not yet opened discussions for a contract extension, and they would likely wait until early in the off season to start negotiating.

Martino adds that there could be a change in culture within the organization with the likelihood of the club missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Martino speculates the Mets could trade a core player such as Reyes or David Wright. Read More→

FOXSports’ Ken Rosenthal says the Minnesota Twins have acquire left-handed pitcher Brian Fuentes from the Los Angeles Angels for a player to be named later.

Team Acquires
Los Angeles Angels Player to be named later
Minnesota Twins LHP Brian Fuentes

Rosenthal adds that Fuentes will give the Twins another option to close with Matt Capps.

There were questions earlier this month if the Angels were going to re-sign the free-agent-to-be Fuentes.
Fuentes is in the final year of his two-year, $17.5 million deal that he signed before the 2009 season. There is a $9 million option for 2011 that will automatically vest if he finishes 55 games this season. He’s currently at 33 games finished, so it’s unlikely that the option will vest.

Fuentes, was 4-1 with a 3.52 ERA and 23 saves this season for the Angels.

Entering play today, the Los Angeles Dodgers are five games back in the National League Wild Card standings, so that poses the question – Are they close enough to make a run or do they just fold up and try to move players before the August 31st deadline?

Manny Ramirez was claimed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox earlier today, and now the Dodgers the Sox have until Tuesday to work out a deal. Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports said Dodgers’ GM Ned Colletti is in a wait-and-see mode. Colletti may wait until the outcome of this weekends’ Dodgers-Rockies series before they decide to move Ramirez.  Colletti said via USA Today’s Bob Nightengale that he is “not inclined to move anyone” as long as the team has a chance. So this weekends Dodgers-Rockies series could ultimately decide how the team will compete in September. Read More→
