8/16 19:26: First round pick (14th overall) Dylan Covey has rejected the offer made by the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He will go to the University of San Diego instead of pursuing a pro career now.
Brewers’ scouting director Bruce Seid said, “It wasn’t about money.”
The estimated slot bonus for the 14th overall pick is $1.602 million. Haudricourt says the Coveys were seeking $2 million.
“There are no hard feelings,” said Seid, who was in Pasadena, Calif., to negotiate with Covey’s father, Darrell, who was handling negotiations from that end. “It’s an amicable situation.
“We offered a nice contract and bonus. There’s nothing that we didn’t try to do. We did everything in our power to get him to be a Brewer. You need to talk to the Covey family to get their side of it. They will have to explain what happened.”
Unless Covey changes his mind, the Brewers will get a compensation pick in the first round next year.
Covey, 19, was 7-1 with a 0.40 ERA with 138 strikeouts and 20 walks in 70 2/3 innings for Marantha High School. he had a fastball in the 93-94 mph range and touches 96 mph. His curveball is in the 83-86 mph range.

8/16 19:33: According to a Mets’ spokesman (via Adam Rubin of ESPN), “We are exploring all of our options” regarding voiding the contract.
8/16 15:43: According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, he tweets, “#mets are looking into voiding k-rod’s contract”
The team is trying to see if they can void what’s left of the $37 million, three-year contract based on Francisco Rodriguez injuring himself outside the course of play.
Rodriguez suffered thumb ligament damage during a fight with his girlfriend’s father. The right-handed pitcher was eventually charged with assault in the case.
Rodriguez’s salary is $11.5 million in 2010 and also in 2011. He has a $17.5 million vesting option for 2012 with a $3.5 million buyout. That option vests with 100 games finished in 2010 and 2011 combined or 55 games finished in ‘11, so it’s unlikely the option would go into affect anyway.
