7/9 22:57: Zach Schonburn of MLB.com says the Werth is shaking off any trade rumors involving his name.
“What rumors?” Werth asked before Friday’s game. “I haven’t really heard anything. I don’t read those sites.”
7/9 13:54: The Phillies aren’t in a position to subtract a bat. One official said (via ESPN Insider) “I’d be very surprised if they move him.”
There was no indication Friday that the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays were on the verge of trading for Werth, although the Phillies would have interest in Yankees pitcher Javy Vazquez if the Yankees decide to trade him.
7/9 08:15: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports tweets, “Source: [Javier] Vazquez for Werth a “50-to-1″ shot. Werth to #Rays also a longshot. ”
Rosenthal adds in another tweet, “#Phillies seeking players who could contribute instantly for Werth – and would be under club control beyond this season.”
7/9 07:38: According to several sources close to George A. King III of the New York Post, the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays have informed the Philadelphia Phillies that the would be interested in outfielder Jayson Werth if the team put him on the market. Werth, 31, will be a free agent after this season.
“He is the piece for all those teams,” said a person not affiliated with any of the four teams involved.
With so many teams interested in Werth, don’t expect him to pass through waivers if the Phillies dealt him next month. Werth could be used in right or left field or as a DH. He’s currently batting .277 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs.
The Yankees are also keeping Baltimore Orioles’ infielder Ty Wigginton and Oakland Athletics’ Michael Wuertz on their radar.
