Willie Bloomquist trade rumors: Drawing interest from Red Sox, Phillies and Yankees?

By Allan

Veteran utilityman Willie Bloomquist of the Kansas City Royals is drawing attention from several club ahead of the July 31st trade deadline.

According to Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star, the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees are looking additional help. The Red Sox and Phillies are looking to replenish their injury-filled roster and the Yankees would like to add some bats to their bench.

“I’ve been around long enough,” Bloomquist said, “to know you don’t put too much stock in things until it happens. But it’s kind of fun to hear you name (in trade rumors) once in a while.”

“It shows that people still know who you are. If there’s some interest in you, that’s not a bad thing. That means people like you, and you’re doing something right.”

Bloomquist versatility allows his team to place him almost anywhere on the diamond except pitcher and catcher, and his speed makes him an ideal pinch-running candidate.

He does like Kansas City and would prefer to stay.

“I’m hoping to play another five or six years,” he said, “and I like the idea of finishing it out here. I really think we’ve got it going in the right direction. And if we’re ever successful, it would be huge in Kansas City.”

Bloomquist, 32, is hitting .247/.291/.397 and whoever receives him in a trade is responsible for roughly $850,000 of his salary.
