What will the Nationals do with Adam Dunn? Renegotiate contract or trade him?

By Allan

Washington Nationals first baseman Adam Dunn is stuck in team limbo right now. Earlier today, we heard that that the Nat’s may attempt to extend Dunn’s contract in the next eight days, and if they can’t do it then they’ll trade him.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports clarifies this by saying that the team will offer a new contract just before the July 31 non-waiver deadline then trade him if he rejects the deal. Rosenthal says this strategy could backfire.

If the deal is rejected by Dunn, it could irritate teammates such as third baseman Ryan Zimmerman.

“Anything is possible, but we clearly do like Adam Dunn, make no mistake about that,” Nationals president Stan Kasten said on Thursday.

The Chicago White Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays have been known to be interested in the power hitting first baseman, so the Nationals have a few options.

Kasten said that he would be more comfortable negotiating a deal with Dunn after the season.
