Update – VIDEO: Don Mattingly goes to mound twice and forced to remove Jonathan Broxton
By7/21 15:22: Hank Shulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says the umpires made an error in last night’s game. According to rule 8.06, if two mound visits occur while the same batter is up, the umpire must eject the manager and require the pitcher to face that batter. Only then, should the pitcher be removed. Had the Dodgers protested the game, there’s a chance it would have been upheld and the game replayed, but the Dodgeres neglected to protest.
7/20 00:08: From time-to-time we like to take a look at the lighter side of baseball and get away from the traditional rumors. So to start off your Wednesday take a look at Donnie Baseball and a rookie mistake. Let’s just say that Don Mattingly has a few things to learn before he becomes a full-time manager. His mistake in last night’s game cost the Dodgers a victory. Check out this video (fast forward to the 0:38 mark to see all the action):
Because San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy called Mattingly on Rule 8.06(d) “A manager or coach is considered to have concluded his visit to the mound when he leaves the 18-foot circle surrounding the pitcher’s rubber,” the Dodgers were forced to remove closer Jonathan Broxton and go with a relatively cold pitcher in George Sherrill who later gave up the game-winning double to Andres Torres. Mattingly was the manager because Joe Torre was ejected earlier in the game.
Here’s the video that shows all the shenanigans before the Mattingly incident.
