Texas Rangers looking for right-handed hitting first baseman

The Texas Rangers are still looking for a right-handed hitting first baseman, despite being held to strict financial parameters. Possible candidates for the Rangers include Florida Marlins’ Jorge Cantu and Wes Helms, Boston Red Sox Mike Lowell and Baltimore Orioles Ty Wigginton, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.
“For quite some time, we have been looking for a right-handed complement,” assistant GM Thad Levine said. “That hasn’t changed as a piece we’d like to add.”
Currently, the team is making due with Chris Davis as their everyday first baseman. He’s been with the big league club since the team traded away Justin Smoak to the Seattle Mariners.
The Rangers have been going back and forth with the Red Sox regarding infielder Lowell. Lowell could play first base, but the Rangers will need to hope the Sox pick up most of his salary. Lowell is due a little less than $6 million for the remainder of the season, and given the Rangers’ bankruptcy situation, they cannot take on too much payroll if any.
Texas may have some competition in the first base department. Division rival, the Los Angeles Angels, are also looking for first base help.
