Texas Rangers interested in Red Sox Mike Lowell
By
According to a Major League source close to Rob Bradford of WEEI, the Texas Rangers continue to monitor the status of Boston Red Sox infielder Mike Lowell. The Rangers may have increased interest in making a deal for Lowell depending on how the market unfolds as the trade deadline draws closer.
Lowell was originally going to be traded to the Texas Rangers this winter, but it was called off after doctors discovered the ligament tear in his thumb. Part of the deal with the Rangers was that the Red Sox were going to pick up $9 million of the $12 million salary.
There’s a potential need at first base for the Texas Rangers. The source says the Rangers will continue to explore other trade options before accelerating negotiations for Lowell.
Because All-Star Adrian Beltre has taken over at third base for the Red Sox, Lowell’s playing time has decreased significantly this season. Because he has a $12 million salary for 2010, the Red Sox have been reluctant to let him walk away for nothing. Lowell is currently hitting .212/.308/.350 in 31 games for the Red Sox this season.
