Tampa Bay Rays acquire RHP Chad Qualls from Arizona Diamondbacks

By Allan

7/31 07:34: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated has confirmed this deal pending approval of the commissioner’s office.

7/31 04:27: The Tampa Bay Rays are on the verge of acquiring right-handed relief pitcher Chad Qualls from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named later, according to a baseball source close to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

The Rays will cover the roughly $1.6 million Qualls is owed for the rest of the season.

7/31 00:05: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says that the Tampa Bay Ray are showing interest in Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Chad Qualls.

Earlier today, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says that there were many “nibbles” for Qualls, but nothing at the time was close.

The Tampa Bay Rays have been interested in Qualls. The Mets had interest in Qualls too, but it is now known if they still are interested.

Earlier this month, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated said Qualls has a lot of guts and could work as a middle reliever for a contender. The big problem with Qualls is his poor stats. The 31-year-old reliever is 1-4 with 12 saves and a 8.51 ERA this season. He has a horrible WHIP of 2.054.
