State of the MLB Trade Deadline market
ByJon Heyman of Sports Illustrated did a rundown of who may be sellers by the July 31st trade deadline. Here’s a quick summary.
Arizona Diamondbacks:
- Willing to trade almost anyone except Justin Upton, Ian Kennedy and Mark Reynolds.
- Talking with teams about at least five veteran players now including Dan Haren
- Looking seriously at dealing one or more from Adam LaRoche, Kelly JohnsonChad Qualls
- Fielding inquiries for Edwin Jackson
Houston Astros:
- Roy Oswalt is on the market with the Astros willing to pay some of the contract depending on the return they get.
- Lance Berkman could help someone if he drops the requirement of exercising his $15 million option for 2011.
- Just about everybody but Hunter Pence is available, but Michael Bourn is probably somebody they want to keep.
Kansas City Royals
- Zack Greinke and Billy Butler are unavailable.
- Availability of closer Joakim Soria is unknown, but one GM believes they would move him.
- Royals would love to move Jose Guillen and will eat a lot of his $12 million salary.
- David DeJesus is seen as a prize for several teams including the Boston Red Sox.
Cleveland Indians:
- Starting pitchers Fausto Carmona and Jake Westbrook are available. Carmona could be a “fall-back”option for teams that do not get Cliff Lee.
- They will want to keep outfielder Shin-Shin-Soo Choo and catcher Carlos Santana and a few of their younger pitchers.
Washington Nationals:
- Adam Dunn, Nyjer Morgan, Josh Willingham and Cristian Guzman could be available.
- Dunn could be a fit for the Yankees or Angels.
Baltimore Orioles:
- Plans to keep Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Brian Matusz and Matt Wieters.
- Ty Wigginton and Kevin Millwood are available.
Toronto Blue Jays:
- Jose Bautista, Jason Frasor, Scott Downs, Shaun Marcum, Kevin Gregg, Lyle Overbay and Vernon Wells could draw interest.
Seattle Mariners:
- In addition to Cliff Lee, reliever David Aardsma could interest teams.
Pittsburgh Pirates:
- Team won’t do much selling.
- Closer Octavio Dotel could be shopped. He could be a good set-up man for the Mets.
Chicago Cubs:
- Team would love to move players with high contracts including Carlos Zambrano, Kosuke Fukudome, Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano.
- They will keep Ryan Dempster.
- Derrek Lee and Ted Lilly could be moved.
Milwaukee Brewers:
- They will likely keep Prince Fielder until the winter.
- Corey Hart could bring in something decent
Florida Marlins:
- The team looks like they will stay competitive and not sell.
- If they become sellers, one exec wonders if Cody Ross and Dan Uggla could become available.
