St. Louis Cardinals trying to get a starting pitcher – Jake Westbrook or Dan Haren?

By Allan

According to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse, the St. Louis Cardinals are trying to get a starter with their focus on Cleveland Indians’ Jake Westbrook and Arizona Diamondbacks’ Dan Haren.

The Cardinals’ starting rotation is not doing too well with Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse on the disabled list. Last month, manager Tony La Russa said, “We’ve got two starters missing, so even if we’ve got a guarantee that Penny’s coming back in top form, you’re still going to be looking for help. You don’t know what Lohse is going to be.”

Haren said that he would consider waiving his partial no-trade clause for the right team, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com.

“It is most definitely not ‘No way.’ I definitely would consider it,” said Haren.

“I was born and raised on the West Coast … obviously staying on the West Coast would be nice. If I went to the East, if a trade came with a team on my no-trade (list), I would have to consider it,” he said.

Last weekend, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said Haren can reject trades to twelve clubs.

Other teams that have been linked to Haren include the New York Mets, New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers. Haren has previously said that he would like to come back to St. Louis – the city where he started his Major League career.

Westbrook is making $11 million this season, so any club that acquires him will be responsible for about $5 million or so. He’s a free agent after this year. The Mets have had “lukewarm feelings about Westbrook.
