Scott Boras on the future of Prince Fielder

By Allan

Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel spent some time with agent Scott Boras to talk about Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder.

Haudricourt asked Boras if Fielder is a player that the Brewers could afford in the long-term. Boras said that Fielder is a “rare, rare commodity” and every player that has accomplished what he has (181 home runs in 764 major-league games) is a Hall of Famer.

Fielder is a free agent after the 2011 season and there’s speculation that he will want as much as $200 million over eight -years. He’ll definitely want to top Ryan Howard’s deal of five-years for $125 million that was signed earlier this season. Given the liklihood of a high-priced contract, the small market Brewers may be forced to trade their slugger as soon as this month in order to get something before he walks away.

Boras notes that Fielder is a more accomplished power hitter and younger than his other client, New York Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira, who signed an eight-year, $180 million deal prior to the 2009 season.

“Prince is a home-run hitter. He’s 70 home runs ahead of Teixeira at that point (of his career). Prince has much more power. This is how you (gauge) performance and age and production. You have to ask in the market place how many players can do this?”
