By
7/16 12:10: Latos is on the disabled for his sneezing injury, according to Bill Center of the Union-Tribune.
The possibility of Latos going on the DL was first reported by Steve Adler of the Friarhood.com.
7/15 16:39: According to the Corey Brock of MLB.com, “Latos said he hurt his left side trying to hold back a sneeze on Friday in Colorado. 1st time he’s felt it. Expect DL Friday.”
7/13 10:04: According to Bill Center of the Union-Tribune, Latos might be placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 9. This would make him eligible to return July 24 in Pittsburgh, and he would only miss three starts.
The disabled list would also allow the team to limit Latos’ innings. With the time off, Center says Latos will be on target for 180-185 innings pitched – 30 more innings that what is targeted.
7/12 10:36: While there’s no official confirmation on Latos being placed on the disabled list, Adler responds in a comment to gaslampball.com:
Per the commish’s office they do not like any news announced prior to the All Star Game by teams or players not involved in the game.
With that said, I will hold my position until Wednesday, at which point I will either be a public punching bag or just a guy who reported some news.
7/11 19:55: According to Steve Adler of the Friarhood.com, the San Diego Padres will place starting pitcher Mat Latos on the disabled list.
Last week we talked about ownership green lighting additional financial flexibility to improve the team by the trade deadline, and starting pitching is on Jed Hoyer’s wish list. With the injury to Latos, will this accelerate the team’s need to add the starting pitcher?
The top name starting pitching that could be available include Roy Oswalt, Ben Sheets, Jeremy Guthrie, Dan Haren, Edwin Jackson, Fausto Carmona and Jake Westbrook.
Latos, 22, is 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA.
