According to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer the San Diego Padres are interested in right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook of the Cleveland Indians. Westbrook is a free agent at the end of the season and has about $4.48 million left on his $11 million contract.

Westbrook’s name has come up frequently in trade rumors whenever a team mentions a need for a starting pitcher. He was a target for the New York Mets in June, and the team had a first-hand look at him when they faced each other in Interleague play.

Westbrook, 32, has said he wants to stay with Cleveland, so there’s a possibility that the team will try to re-sign him after the season. The right-hander is 5-5 with a 4.75 ERA in 18 starts this year.
