Update – San Diego Padres contacted Orioles regarding 3B Miguel Tejada

By Allan

7/22 09:26: The Padres have contacted the Orioles about the availability of the 35-year-old infielder, according to Bill Center of the Union-Tribune. The Orioles are seeking a high price for the shortstop-third baseman.

Tejada would likely cost the Padres about a third of his $6 million contract for 2010 plus prospects, which could include pitchers Corey Luebke and/or Simon Castro.

“If they say they are interested in Tejada, now is the time to do it,” Adrian Gonzalez said. “What’s more important than the next 10 games? If that’s who you want, get him now.”

7/19 15:50 Corey Brock of MLB.com tweets, “Hearing #Orioles SP Jeremy Guthrie is not a target of the #Padres, but there is interest in Miguel Tejada.”

Tejada’s trade opportunity has taken a backseat to teammate and fellow infielder Ty Wigginton. The Philadelphia Phillies have been searching for infield help, and have investigated Tejada.

Tejada, 36, may only be limited to third base duties despite being a shortstop throughout his career. He hasn’t played shortstop since last season with the Houston Astros. Tejada is currently hitting .275/.314/.372 in 87 games this year.

Guthrie was mentioned as a trade interest of the New York Mets this morning. The Padres could use starting pitching since many of their young pitchers could be on a strict innings count.
