Pittsburgh Pirates are beyond the prospect collection mode

By Allan

July is traditionally is the annual Pittsburgh Pirates clearance sale, but the team is going against the norm and standing pat rather than clearing out its inventory.

“This year, we’ve got some guys that we’re not real motivated to move,” GM Neal Huntington said. “If we get a good baseball trade, then we’ll make it. But we’re beyond the prospect collection mode, and we’re trying to move forward with this group.”

Potential trading chips include Paul Maholm, Zach Duke, Ryan Doumit, Brendan Donnelly, D.J. Carrasco and Octavio Dotel, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.

Dotel has arguably been the most coveted of all the Pirates’ players. The Florida Marlins have shown interest in the reliever, but nothing is currently on the table. He is reasonably priced at $3.5 million for this year, and he as club option for $4.5 million for 2011 (it becomes a mutual option if he is dealt). If the Pirates trade Dotel, Evan Meek will likely become the closer for next year.
