Nick Cafardo on Fausto Carmona, Adam Dunn, Lou Piniella, Tampa Bay Rays, Kevin Towers and Evan Meek
ByNick Cafardo of The Boston Globe has a few pieces of news to follow on this Sunday morning:
Right-handed pitcher Fausto Carmona of the Cleveland Indians had the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers sniffing around about him before the Cliff Lee deal took place.
Adam Dunn could command a contract in the $15-18 million range, but the Washington Nationals nor any other team would likely take a chance to pay him that much despite his solid offensive production.
Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella will likely finish out the season with the Cubbies, and he’s said that this will be his last managing job. Cafardo thinks that he could be lured into something else. Piniella could be a good fit for a team needing a jump-start.
The Tampa Bay Rays would love to get an effective hitter and are willing to deal players from their current roster rather than prospects. Trade chips includ Matt Garza, Jeremy Hellickson, B.J. Upton and Wade Davis.
Chicago Cubs Ted Lilly is an attractive second-tier pitcher and could be a target of the Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers.
Kevin Towers, current special assistant to the New York Yankees and former GM to the San Diego Padres, is emerging as a leading candidate to the open Arizona Diamondbacks’ GM job.
Cafardo says right-handed pitcher Evan Meek of the Pittsburgh Pirates is a guy the Red Sox should go after.
