Update – New York Yankees unlikely to go after Roy Oswalt or Dan Haren?

By Allan

7/10 15:26: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Yankees are not going to get involved in Oswalt or Haren since Cliff Lee was the team’s Holy Grail.

Oswalt is unlikely going to be traded unless the Houston Astros’ owner, Drayton McLane, is willing to pick up a significant portion of the salary owed to the right-hander.

The Diamondbacks would need to be overwhelmed by any offer in order to trade Haren.

The Yankees biggest need is a backup third basemen to spell Alex Rodriguez. The team recently signed infielder Chad Tracy, so expect him to get the next shot.

7/10 14:07: ESPN Insider says the New York Yankees could still be on the market for a starting pitcher, and it could be Houston Astros’ Roy Oswalt or Arizona Diamondbacks Dan Haren that they are targeting.

There are several pitchers available in the July trade market, but they won’t necessarily make the Yankees better. In a perfect world, the Yankees would try to replace Javier Vazquez or Phil Hughes in the rotation, so the team is likely looking for a top-tier, front-of-the-line starter such as Oswalt or Haren.

ESPN Insider says Haren makes more sense to the Yankees because he’s under club control at least through 2012, but will likely cost more in prospects. Jesus Montero is likely one of the candidates that would go in any trade for Haren or Oswalt.

Oswalt has a high price tag in terms of contract. It is likely that any time acquiring Oswalt will be responsible for the rest of his $15 million this year, $16 million next year and a $2 million buyout on the 2012 team option. Not only do the Astros want to push the contract to the new team, but they also want prospects in return.
