New York Mets looking for pitching – Lilly? Myers? Westbrook? Oswalt?

By Allan

Andy Martino of the New York Daily News says the Mets retain some interest in Ted Lilly, Brett Myers, Jake Westbrook and—if he becomes significantly less expensive—Roy Oswalt.

The Mets’ rotation of Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey and Jon Niese are secure in their jobs, and the recent success of R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi has reduced the team’s need to make a trade for a starting pitcher. However, the team is still open to making a deal. They have scouted Chicago Cubs left-handed pitcher Ted Lilly and the Cubs have been doing their homework on three Mets’ prospects.

New York also has “lukewarm” feelings about Cleveland Indians’ pitcher Jake Westbrook. Houston Astros’ pitcher Brett Myers and Roy Oswalt are possibilities, but Oswalt’s price is still too high. Myers may be the most affordable option. He’s owed about $2.5 million this season and has an $8 million option for 2011.

There are conflicting reports on the Mets’ ability to add payroll. A team official said that financial decision will be approached on a case-by-case basis, and the Mets will be able to increase their payroll in-season if necessary.
