Money won’t be an object for the Tampa Bay Rays

By Allan

Tampa Bay Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said “money won’t be an object” for in-season additions to help the team make a run for the playoffs.

While the bank isn’t completely open, Sternberg added that the cost of any moves would have to be weighed against future costs, but he was open to improving the team, according to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times.

“We’re well beyond stretched (payroll-wise), but for me, personally, this is a very special year, it’s a special team, can be a special team, and we’re going to do whatever we can, whatever’s necessary, to try to give us the best opportunity to win this year,” he said.

“Our eye is really about making the post-season,” Sternberg said.

Asked if the Rays could make a “significant” addition, Sternberg replied: “By any means necessary. We’ll do whatever — money won’t be an object. Players are always an object for us. And the money will be an impediment, but we’ll figure it out if it makes all the sense in the world for this team.”

The Rays have been mentioned as a possible destination for Cliff Lee. Earlier today, Peter Gammons of MLB.com mentioned “rumblings” of a possible three-way trade that involved B.J. Upton and Lee. This aggressive nature could be a signal from the team of a “win-now” mentality”, since it is believed the Rays will reduce payroll next season.
