Molina trade allows Giants to acquire a productive hitter
ByChris Haft of MLB.com says that the Bengie Molina trade not only allows Buster Posey to become the team’s primary catcher, it also sets up the next Giants’ trade – a productive hitter.
Now that Posey has playing time at catcher, that will open up first base and the team can have the flexibility to play Pablo Sandoval at third or first.
GM Brian Sabean is supposedly pursuing a corner infielder and an outfielder. Sabean said he and his the management team will discus “how we’re going to bring somebody else in here.”
The Giants have no desire to rent a player, so those that are free agents after this season are unlikely on the team’s wish list. Those that have been rumored to be a target for the Giants include outfielders like Corey Hart, David DeJesus or Josh Willingham – all are either signed through 2010 or arbitration-eligible and thus under team control.
The team also has been linked to Jose Guillen of the Kansas City Royals, but he’ll be a free agent after this season. He has a balance of $6.2 million left on his contract, but if the Royals are motivated to move him and eat up a lot of that money then he’s a possibility for the Giants.
