Ken Rosenthal on Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Atlanta Braves, Ryan Ludwick, New York Mets and Carlos Zambrano

By Allan

After a hard morning of work cover the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, Rosenthal went right back to it with his Full Count Video. Here are the highlights:

Jarrod Saltalamacchia – a last minute acquisition by the Boston Red Sox from the Texas Rangers. He has had a history of injury and throwing problems, but the Red Sox scouted him hard, and they believe he will benefit from a change of scenery. Boston feels that he’s worth a gamble especially since they do not know the futures of Victor Martinez or Jason Varitek.

Good smart and contending teams make aggressive moves. That’s what the Braves did today when they acquired Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth from the Royals. The Braves did not need either player, but they both will help their depth considerably. Ankiel will be the regular center fielder against right-handed pitching and platoon with Melky Cabrera. Farnsworth will give the club the help in the middle innings, and help to not wear down Takashi Saito and Jonny Venters. Atlanta is cleary going for it all in Bobby Cox’s last season.

Given the Cardinals’ recent offensive woes, it’s hard to believe that they traded a hitter in Ryan Ludwick, but the team is happy with Jon Jay’s performance. One thing to note is that Ludwick is making $5.5 million this season and will likely make a lot more in his final year of arbitration eligibility. By trading Ludwick, the Cardinals were able to get something they really wanted – Jake Westbrook.

Probably no team did as poorly at the deadline, relative to its competition, as the New York Mets. The Mets were completely shutout. The Mets did go after Carlos Zambrano by offering Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo, but the Cubs wanted no part of that. The Cubs hope that Zambrano will comeback and rebuild his value, and hopefully he’ll have a lot more value than what the Mets were offering.
