Josh Willingham wants to remain with the Washington Nationals

By Allan

Washington Nationals’ outfielder Josh Willingham is having a productive year hitting .277/.407/.512 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs. It’s likely that he’ll be named to the National League All-Star squad before the weekend is done. However, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post thinks that he may not be in a Nationals’ uniform come July 31.

“There’s not really a lot you can do with it,” Willingham said. “If it happens, it’s going to happen. You can’t control it, so I don’t worry about it.”

The 31-year-old may be the Nationals’ most valuable trading chip and his name has been in MLB trade rumors over the last few weeks. Not only is he solid offensively, he’s also under team control through 2011 – two factors that make him very attractive to teams in the playoff hunt.

“We’ll see how it plays it out,” Willingham said. “At the end of the year, if I’m still here – at the end of the year, we’ll go through the arbitration process or something else.”

Willingham says he would like to stay in Washington not for just this season, but beyond. “I like it here a lot,” Willingham said. “I don’t have control of where I go until I’m free agent, so I don’t worry about it. But I’m really comfortable with the organization. I like everybody involved, teammates, everything.”
