Jon Paul Morosi on Trade Deadline Buyers, Holders and Sellers
ByJohn Paul Morosi of FOXSports does a team-by-team review of what each club should do by the July 31st trade deadline. Here are the highlights:
American League
New York Yankees (Buyers): Oakland Athletics’ Ben Sheets is one possibility for rotation help. The team is also looking at Blue Jays’ reliever Scott Downs.
Tampa Bay Rays (Buyers): Philadelphia Phillies’ Jayson Werth is a target.
Boston Red Sox (Buyers): An outfield bat remains the most likely upgrade.
Detroit Tigers (Buyers): Brandon Inge is out of the lineup, a third baseman has been added to the Tigers’ shopping list.
Minnesota Twins (Buyers): Chicago Cubs’ left-hander Ted Lilly would be a nice fit.
Toronto Blue Jays (Sellers): Team could move first baseman Lyle Overbay and/or John Buck.
Oakland Athletics (Sellers): Every Oakland pitcher is in play except Brett Anderson, Andrew Bailey and Trevor Cahill.
Baltimore Orioles (Sellers): Jeremy Guthrie could be had for the right price. Julio Lugo would a serviceable utility man for a contending club.
National League
San Diego Padres (Buyers): The Brewers Corey Hart could be an option. The team is also looking for a veteran starting pitcher.
St. Louis Cardinals (Buyers): Baltimore Orioles’ Ty Wigginton would be a nice fit. One more arm for the rotation and/or bullpen would help too.
Colorado Rockies (Hold): Haven’t ruled out the possibility of a right-handed bat or bullpen upgrade.
Los Angeles Dodgers (Hold): Scouts are looking for pitchers – both starters and relievers.
New York Mets (Buyers): Team is focused on relievers.
Philadelphia Phillies (Buyers/Sellers): The Phillies need pitching if they want to win a third straight NL pennant.
Chicago Cubs (Sellers): RHP Ryan Dempster is not available. Those that are available include Kosuke Fukudome, Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Zambrano.
Arizona Diamondbacks (Sellers): Adam LaRoche, Kelly Johnson, Chad Qualls, Aaron Heilman are available, but won’t be easy to move.
