Joe Girardi jumps the gun and mistakenly names Michael Young as replacement All Star
By
Earlier today American League All-Star manager Joe Girardi named Texas Rangers Michael Young to the American League All-Star team during a press conference as a replacement for Adrian Beltre. The announcement eventually turned into apologies since Beltre will likely play in tomorrow’s game, according to Anthony Andro of The Dallas Morning News.
“Clearly it was a communication misunderstanding,” Major League Baseball’s Phyllis Merhige said. “Michael Young is the next guy on the player voting, so if Adrian Beltre can’t play it’s Michael Young. But Adrian had said all along he was going to make a decision about how he felt. I don’t know where Joe got it from. Maybe I miscommunicated it.”
The winners in this mess – the owners of the Texas Rangers. They get to save an All-Star bonus. Young, 33, has a $50,000 All-Star bonus had he been named to the team.
