Florida Marlins to consider San Diego Padres bench coach Ted Simmons for managerial position

By Allan

A Major League source close to Tom Krasovic of AOL FanHouse said the Florida Marlins will consider San Diego Padres bench coach Ted Simmons for the open managerial position.

Simmons, 60, was an eight-time All-Star catcher over 21 seasons. He’s never been a full-time field manager, but has substituted during times when the manager was absent. He was also the Pittsburgh Pirates general manager from 1992-1993, but changed positions after a heart attack in 1992.

“At this point I either get on with doing it or forget about it, and it’s much too compelling to forget about it,” Simmons said.

“He’ll come to managing with a great perspective because of where he’s been his entire baseball career — player, farm director, GM, scout,” said Padres manager Bud Black. “He will truly have insights on what ideally makes an organization go. He blends a strong passion for the game with some absolutes that he truly believes in, but there is also a side in him that’s innovative and creative.”

Interim Marlins’ manager, Edwin Rodriguez, and others will likely interview for the open position after the season.

At one point late last month, it was all but official that Bobby Valentine was going to be the next manager of the Florida Marlins, but things fell apart. The Marlins eventually named interim manager Edwin Rodriguez as the team’s manager for the rest of the season.
