Update – Florida Marlins have made INF Jorge Cantu and OF Cody Ross available

By Allan

7/12 13:22: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Marlins have made infielder Jorge Cantu and outfielder Cody Ross available. They are also holding off – for now – on second baseman Dan Uggla and right-handed pitcher Ricky Nolasco.

The Rockies would be a good candidate to add Cantu.

7/12 09:45: President Larry Beinfest said he expects the team to be “active” according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.

“We’re throwing around ideas,” said Beinfest. “We’re not writing off the season by any means. But . . . we’re not gaining ground. We’re losing ground. There are a lot of teams ahead of us in the wild card. We’ve been waiting to get hot, and it hasn’t happened.”

Beinfest said, “Will we be active? Yes, always, and it’s already starting. The chatter has picked up the last week.”

Spencer says the Marlins are unlikely to part with right-handed pitcher Ricky Nolasco.

7/11 15:25: Florida Marlins president of baseball operations, Larry Beinfest, said he has already had conversations about the direction of the team and whether it will change before the July 31st trading deadline, according to Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post. Beinfest was hoping for a winning streak to position the team for a playoff run, but unfortunately that hasn’t happened for the Marlins.

“Will we be active? Yes, always and it’s already starting. The chatter has picked up in the last week. Teams now have a pretty good idea of who they are and what they’re going to be heading into the break. I would have liked to have seen a run here on this road (trip) but were just kind of.. not giving us a sustained streak.

While no specific names were mentioned as trade candidates, there are a few players on the Marlins’ roster that could help other teams such as Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu. Earlier today, those name came up when reference the needs of the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels are currently looking for infield help and Uggla or Cantu can assist the team for their playoff chase.

“We have some people we think are ready that can help is we wanted tweak, if we wanted to make a trade or two. I don’t think were gonna force anything. Now we’re 18 months away from the new (ballpark)so we have to keep an eye on that as well. We want to get or core, our base that we think is gonna head into the building and start to look forward.
