Cubs manager Lou Piniella to retire after the season

The 2010 season with the Chicago Cubs will be manager Lou Piniella’s last. The 66-year-old released a statement Tuesday saying that he will retire after this season – his 23rd as a big league manager.
“I couldn’t be more appreciative of the Cubs organization for providing me the opportunity to manage this ballclub,” Piniella said in a statement released by the team. “I’ve had four wonderful years here that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. I’ve grown to love the city and the fans but at my age it will be time to enter a new phase in my life. It will enable me to spend more valuable time with my family — my wife, my kids and my grandchildren. God has blessed me to have been able to work this many years in the game that I love.”
Entering play Tuesday, Piniella had a career record of 1826-1691 as a manager with the Cubs, Yankeees, Mariners and Rays. He won a World Championship with the Cincinnati Reds in 1990.
There’s speculation that former Cub, Ryne Sandberg, will take over as manager of the Cubs next season. Sandberg, 50, has been a field manager since 2006 and is currently at Triple-A Iowa.
