Update – Colorado Rockies interested in Dan Uggla of the Florida Marlins?

By Allan

7/16 10:58: The uncertainty of the return of first baseman Todd Helton may accelerate a possible deal for the Rockies. Helton’s back and legs are feeling better now, but it is unlikely he will be activated before Monday. He will be with the team in Florida, and will likely have a few rehab at-bats before he is activated off the DL.

A trade could hinge on the performance of the team’s battery of first basemen in Jason Giambi, Brad Eldred, Melvin Mora, Brad Hawpe, and Chris Iannetta

7/14 11:53: Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post says Marlins infielder Jorge Cantu could be another player that would fit the Rockies. Cantu’s right-handed bat consistently drives in runs.

7/13 09:51: According to Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post, there were strong indications Monday that the Colorado Rockies remain interested in Uggla.

Uggla would provide the Rockies a proven right-handed bat, but Renck wonders where he would play since the team doesn’t need a second baseman.

If the Rockies acquire Uggla, he could see time at third or first base.

7/7 11:25: Buster Olney of ESPN The Magazine says in a series of tweets:

“The Marlins probably need to go on a White Sox-type run to avoid a breakup, but if they do decide to sell, then the Rockies will be ready to talk Dan Uggla — and there is some sense that both sides feel as if they would match up well on a deal. The Marlins might have some interest in catcher Chris Iannetta, as well as some of the Rockies’ pitching.”

In June, the Colorado Rockies’ starting shortstop Troy Tulowitzki broke his left hand and is out until August. At the time, Rockies’ owner, Dick Monfort said, “I think we would be better off weathering the storm. We haven’t hit like I expected. And Tulo being out hurts. But you hope that the bats get going like they have in the past.”

The Rockies are currently in third place and four games out in the National League West.
