Update – Cliff Lee Trade Scenarios: B.J. Upton, Omar Beltre, Yonder Alonso
By
Late yesterday, we found out that the Minnesota Twins are going hard after Mariners’ left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee. They supposedly have offered outfielder Aaron Hicks and top catching prospect Wilson Ramos for Lee. As we keep an eye on the Twins and Mariners, let’s take a look at today’s running list of rumors involving Lee:
- A source close to Buster Olney of ESPN says the Lee trade talks are “heating up”. Some teams are interested in adding the lefty as soon as possible.
- Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says the Detroit Tigers like Lee but aren’t optimistic about their chances of landing him.
- Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports tweets, “Talks between the Mariners and Mets on Cliff Lee haven’t progressed very far, a source said today.”
- Morosi also says that right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson, the Twins’ No. 3 prospects, didn’t make his scheduled start on Monday. Some thought it was because the Twins and the Mariners agreed on a deal that included Gibson. In reality, they just wanted to give Gibson an extra day of rest.
- Ed Price of AOL FanHouse says the Cincinnati Reds are willing to include Minor League first baseman Yonder Alonso for Lee.
- Price also adds that the Texas Rangers have promoted right-handed pitcher Omar Beltre to the Majors to “showcase” him for the Mariners.
- Peter Gammons of MLB.com tweets, “Rumblings around St. Pete ballpark was a BJ Upton-Cliff Lee deal. 3-way?”
