Cliff Lee Rumors: Cincinnati Reds are motivated to get Lee

By Allan

We’ll keep a running list of Cliff Lee rumors here:

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says a number of people in the industry say the Cincinnati Reds are motivated to get Lee – and have the prospects to entice the Mariners. Candidates to be traded from the Reds include third baseman/first baseman Juan Francisco or first baseman/left fielder Yonder Alonso.
  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday says the Rays are not serious suitors for Lee and the Upton for Lee deal has no traction whatsoever.
  • Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune says the Mariners and the Twins are not close to trading Lee. The Mariners are scouting the Twins system, but they are looking at several other teams as well. The Twins and the Mariners have yet to exchange proposals for Lee.
  • Executives from two different clubs interested in Cliff Lee say the Mariners are seeking a “mammoth” return for the left-hander, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports. One of the execs said the Mariners’ request a “crazy ask” and the proposal was in excess of the Twins’ offer of Wilson Ramos and Aaron Hicks. FOXSports adds that the Twins offered Ramos and right-handed pitcher Kevin Slowey instead of Hicks.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports tweets, “I have spoken with two scouts who say Juan Francisco, not Yonder Alonso, would be the #Reds‘ best bat to offer for #CliffLee.”
  • According to Buster Olney of ESPN, here’s his current leaderboard on who will likely land Lee: Twins, Reds, Rays, Mets, Rangers, the Field.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the New York Mets are “not overly concerned by the perception that they are not the front runner for Lee.” The Mets value eyeball scouting of players over statistical analysis, and Mets officials believe that the Mariners are the same way, so the M’s have a different view of the Mets’ prospect base than organizations who break down prospects through statistics.
