Update – Cleveland Indians trade rumors: Jake Westbrook, Kerry Wood, Jhonny Peralta and Austin Kearns
By7/8 12:34: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says multiple teams are interested in Kerry Wood, but nothing is close. Rosenthal adds, “Also interest in Westbrook, less on Kearns, little on Peralta”
7/7 15:36: Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer says there have been no trade talks about Kerry Wood nor has there been much interest in Austin Kearns.
7/4 11:40: The Cleveland Indians are getting into full gear for their annual fire sale. They’ve already cleared out first baseman Russell Branyan to the Seattle Mariners, and it’s possible that they could continue dealing other players. Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer breaks down the possibilities:
Jake Westbrook is currently 5-4 with a 4.69 ERA in 16 starts. He’s playoff tested and could get sharper in the second half, but his salary may stall a deal. He’s making $11 million this season so the Indians would have to pay a good portion of what’s left. He’s a free agent after this season, and it’s a possibility, albeit a far-fetched one that Westbrook is re-signed.
Closer Kerry Wood is in the same predicament. Many teams would like to add a closer-type pitcher for their playoff run, but he’s making $10.5 million this season and that could shy away many prospective employers. He’s also a little inconsistent.
“He’s got a power arm,” one scout said about Wood, “but I don’t like him closing. He walks too many people. But his experience is valuable.”
Infielder Jhonny Peralta could interest teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins who are in search of infield help. He will be a free agent after this season, but he has a $7 million club option for 2011. A source close to Hoynes said the Phillies were not interested in Peralta.
Outfielder Austin Kearns could provide a contender an extra outfielder or bat off the bench.
Cleveland has 27 days left before the non-waiver deadline, but some of their trading chips have a high enough salary where they could clear waivers and get traded well into August.
