Update – Chris Iannetta Trade Rumors: Red Sox and Rockies NOT talking about catcher

7/19 19:22: Sox officials, according to Dan Barbarisi of The Providence Journal, says that there are no trade talks underway.

7/19 14:27: Sources close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports say the Red Sox and Rockies are again talking about catcher Chris Iannetta, but it is more likely a trade would occur in the offseason than before the July 31st trade deadline.

Rosenthal adds the Rockies do not want to trade Iannetta during the season unless they can improve their Major League club. The Red Sox cannot make that kind of deal right now.

Other teams that could be in discussions in the off season include the Texas Rangers if they cannot re-sign Bengie Molina.

6/23 02:55: Colorado Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta is shrugging off all the rumors about the possibility of him landing in Boston with the Red Sox.

“I just said, ‘Don’t believe everything you hear,’” Iannetta said before the Red Sox opened a three-game, inter-league series against the Rockies. “If something were to happen in any way, shape or form, believe it. But until that point, it’s just speculation. I mean, I didn’t pay attention to trade rumors or anything like that. It was kind of counter-productive to where I was at. I could only control things I could control, and that was how I played and the situation I was in, and that’s what my focus was on.”

In late May, there were rumors the Red Sox were tracking the progress of Ianetta in case the Rockies made him available.

The incumbent Red Sox catchers of Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek will be free agents after the end of the season. Iannetta signed a three-year contract extension with the Rockies last Winter for $8.35 million that runs through 2012.
