Bronson Arroyo will not restructure his contract for next year
ByJohn Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer says Reds starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo will not take a discount like teammate Scott Rolen did to stay with the Reds for next year or beyond.
“Not in a million years,” Arroyo said. “Scott’s in a different position than I’m in. He’s in a position where he feels like he’s only got a couple years left in the game. He wanted to retire in this uniform. It’s close to his friends and family. He restructured because he’s made $150 million in the game or whatever it is.
“I’m not in the same boat.”
The team has an $11 million option with a $2 million buyout for 2011 on Arroyo, and given what he just said, the Reds may want to consider trading him before the deadline.
“I gave a team a discount one time and they burned me,” he said in reference to the three-year, $11.25 million deal with the Boston Red Sox in January of 2006.
Arroyo is currently 9-4 with a 4.04 ERA in 120 1/3 innings this year.
