Baltimore Orioles open to all trades except young arms
ByBrittany Ghiroli of MLB.coms says Baltimore Orioles’ president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail will listen to all kinds of offers before the July 31st trade deadline.
“We wouldn’t [make trades] just for the sake of moving payroll,” MacPhail said. He added that the fire-sale approach isn’t something he anticipates.
“Right now, people that have interest in our club [for] the guys that are producing and, although we would have to consider that given the circumstances we find ourselves in, you would need to think that you got something back that would be helpful in the future.”
Ghirolli says MacPhail gets calls from other general managers all the time, but he didn’t name any specific player.
Players that Ghirolli mentions as possible trade chips include infielder Ty Wigginton, third baseman Miguel Tejada, starting pitcher Kevin Millwood, starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, relief pitcher Will Ohman and designated hitter Luke Scott.
Earlier today, we spoke about the possibility of the Philadelphia Phillies acquiring infield help. They recently lost second baseman Chase Utley to a thumb injury and could use somebody like Wigginton or Tejada.
Everybody, but the Orioles’ young pitchers could be dealt. “That’s part of the cornerstone of what we are trying to do,” MacPhail said.
