He adds, San Diego Padres Minor League LHP Nicholas Greenwood goes to the Cardinals.
7/31 09:50: Jon Heyman confirms the deal and adds that the Indians will get prospects.
7/31 09:42: Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets, “#mlb #Padres The deal is official. The Padres get Ludwick and the Cardinals get Westbrook in 3-way deal.”
7/31 09:27: Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com tweets, “According to multiple reports, former #Indians OF Ryan Ludwick would go from #Cardinals to #Padres to complete Westbrook deal.”
7/31 09:21: Buster Olney of ESPN says that the San Diego Padres continue to work on the three-team deal. It’s unclear as to what the Padres are putting into the pot.
7/31 09:12: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets, “Westbrook has agreed to lower the $2M bonus that is part of his contract to facilitate the trade from #Indians to #Cardinals”
Sherman adds that the San Diego Padres were the mystery third team involved, but they have since fallen out.
Sherman again adds, “Players aren’t allowed to lower base pay as part of CBA, but this $2M could only be earned in a trade, so Westbrook could lower that and get union’s blessing, and union has blessed it. Westbrook, in other words, wants to get traded into a pennant race, this deal will get done with Westbrook not starting today for #Indians and becoming No. 4 starter for #Cardinals”
7/31 09:03: Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com says the a third team may be involved in the deal.
7/31 08:26: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says Deal at union level. Trying to work through $$$. Westbrook gets more than 2M in bonuses if he is traded. Also nearly 4M on contract remaining.
7/31 08:20: Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer says the Indians are getting closer to trading Westbrook. Deal is close.
7/31 08:14: Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports tweets, “The Cardinals and Indians are having discussions about Jake Westbrook, who’s due to start this afternoon in Toronto.”
7/30 19:36: The Indians will move Westbrook, only if they get the value they are seeking, according to a source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports. They are not under financial pressure to move his contract.
7/30 17:16: Jayson Stark of ESPN says the St. Louis Cardinals have made Cleveland Indians’ pitcher Jake Westbrook their number one target. The Cardinals are no longer pursuing Colorado Rockies’ Aaron Cook or Washington Nationals’ Livan Hernandez. The chances of Westbrook ultimately being deal are no better than “50-50″ according to a one source familiar with the discussions. The Indians owe Westbrook near $4 million for the rest of this season, and Westbrook will receive a $2 million bonus if he gets traded.
7/30 13:54: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Cleveland Indians know they can move starting pitcher v but Rosenthal wonders if they could get the right price for him. Earlier this week, Jayson Stark of ESPN said that Westbrook seems like the most likely of the Indians’ starting pitchers to be traded. The other possible pitcher to be traded is Fausto Carmona.
Here’s an excerpt from PRO Rumors Top 10 MLB starting pitchers that could be traded by July 31.
Jake Westbrook, Cleveland Indians, RHP: Westbrook is a free agent after this season, and has about $4.48 million left on this year’s contract, so he’d be a good fit for a team that doesn’t want to take on payroll beyond this season. The Indians are in selling mode, and would like to get something for him instead of letting him walk, so expect the team to make a deal. The San Diego Padres and the New York Mets have been mentioned as possible future Westbrook employers.

7/31 08:45: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweets, “Hearing #Pirates will NOT flip Chris Snyder to another team. Ryan Doumit will share time behind plate, play some 1B, RF”
Kovacevic later tweets, “#Pirates getting SS Pedro Ciriaco from AZ to complete Chris Snyder deal.”
7/31 07:49: Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com says the Diamondbacks are getting outfielder Ryan Church, infielder Bobby Crosby and relief pitcher D.J. Carrasco in exchange for Snyder.

7/31 07:34: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated has confirmed this deal pending approval of the commissioner’s office.
7/31 01:21: A baseball source close to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com says the D-backs and the Pirates agreed on a trade late Friday night that would send Chris Snyder to the Pirates pending approval by the commissioner’s office.
It’s unknown as to what the D-Backs will get in return or how much cash will change hands.
7/30 22:34: Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Daily-Republic tweets, “Sounds like the only thing they’re waiting for in Pirates/Dbacks deal with Snyder is commish’s office approval for cash changing hands.”
7/30 19:47: According to Major League sources close to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates have spoken about a trade that would send Dbacks’ catcher Chris Snyder to the Pirates.
FOXSports adds that Arizona would almost certainly need to include a substantial amount of cash in the deal.
The goal for Dbacks in this trade scenario would be to trim payroll. Snyder is earning $4.75 million this season, and he is due $5.75 million next year, then a $6.75 million club option in 2012 with a $750,000 buyout.
The 29-year-old catcher is hitting .231 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs in 65 games this year.

7/31 08:07: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says the New York Mets made an offer on Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano. The Mets offered Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo for Zambrano, but the Cubs did not want Castillo.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said this deal never had a chance. Zambrano will not be moved today.
7/30 15:48: Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times tweets, “Z says wants to stay in chicago but will waive no trade clause if cubs tell him they want to deal him.”
7/27 15:27: Buster Olney of ESPN says the Chicago Cubs have made it clear to other teams that they are ready to move Carlos Zambrano.
A couple of weeks ago PRO Rumors believed that Zambrano could be a good trade candidate. The big right-hander is owed about $45 million from his current five-year deal. Another team with a bad contract close to that amount may be able to take on the big guy and deal with his anger management issues. Earlier this month, there was speculation (read the following with no truth behind it) about a deal for San Francisco Giants’ outfielder Aaron Rowand in exchange for Zambrano. You can read about it here.
Worst case scenario: bat him cleanup – he has 20 career home runs.

7/30 07:58: According to Ken Rosenthal the Yankees will take one last run through the thin bullpen market while trying to add a bench piece.
7/30 19:15: So the Yankees have already acquired Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns, but it looks like they are not done yet. Joel Sherman tweets, “#Yankees believe they are out on pitching, both start and relief. Focusing on better bat than Ramiro Pena to be A-Rod’s 3B backup”
7/30 16:07: We’re less than 24 hours until the 1pm PST July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, but the New York Yankees have plenty of work to do. Buster Olney of ESPN says the Yankees continue to work on other deals, and expect to make at least one and maybe two more acquisitions.
Jack Curry of the YES Network says “don’t be surprised if the Yankees add another piece for bench or bullpen or both.”
In the meantime, you can checkout the last few details surrounding the Yankees acquisitions of Lance Berkman here.

7/31 07:34: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated has confirmed this deal pending approval of the commissioner’s office.
7/31 04:27: The Tampa Bay Rays are on the verge of acquiring right-handed relief pitcher Chad Qualls from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named later, according to a baseball source close to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
The Rays will cover the roughly $1.6 million Qualls is owed for the rest of the season.
7/31 00:05: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says that the Tampa Bay Ray are showing interest in Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed reliever Chad Qualls.
Earlier today, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says that there were many “nibbles” for Qualls, but nothing at the time was close.
The Tampa Bay Rays have been interested in Qualls. The Mets had interest in Qualls too, but it is now known if they still are interested.
Earlier this month, Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated said Qualls has a lot of guts and could work as a middle reliever for a contender. The big problem with Qualls is his poor stats. The 31-year-old reliever is 1-4 with 12 saves and a 8.51 ERA this season. He has a horrible WHIP of 2.054.

7/31 07:29: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated and Jayston Stark of ESPN indicate that the Florida Marlins are calling around and looking for relief pitching.
7/30 20:24: Joe Frisaro of MLB.com says the Florida Marlins are actively purusing Major League-ready bullpen help by the Saturday, non-waiver Trade Deadline. Frisaro says the team is confident it will land an arm who can help for a final stretch run.
The Fish are in need of left-handed relief help since Taylor Takersley is the lone lefty in the bullpen.
Toronto Blue Jays left-handed pitcher Scott Downs could be available from the Blue Jays. Earlier Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said, “#BlueJays unsure if they will make multiple trades or none. One source with knowledge of club’s activities says “million balls in air.””

There’s no secret that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs have been working on a deal for left-handed pitcher Ted Lilly that will likely result in a trade. You can see what has gone on with that deal by clicking here.
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti (via Tony Jackson of ESPNLosAngeles.com) fills us on what else the Dodgers have planned.
“For the time being, we have more or less exhausted the offensive piece,” Colletti said. “We have made a lot of calls, but nothing else is really available right now.”
Jackson says Colletti left the door open for possibly adding another position player sometime in August, after the non-waiver deadline passes. Colletti got a little financial flexibility when Dodgers’ owner Frank McCourt approved an addition $2 million to $3 million to the team’s $83 million payroll. The Dodgers already have added $700,000 in the Scott Podsednik trade, and if the team picks up Lilly, then they would add as much as $4.3 million.
