Rumors for July, 2010

7/31 11:41: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Astros do not expect to move either Myers or Rodriguez

7/31 09:06: According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Houston Astros are talking with teams about trading left-handed pitcher Wandy Rodriguez.

Earlier this morning, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports mentioned that the Astros were fielder offers for both Rodriguez and right-handed pitcher Brett Myers. The White Sox explored the possibility of acquiring Myers yesterday. It was believed that the Astros were going to hold onto Myers since they traded Roy Oswalt to the Philadelphia Phillies. Myers is arguably the best right-handed starter available right now.

7/31 08:29: Sources close to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says the Chicago White Sox asked the Los Angeles Dodgers for Manny Ramirez, but were ultimately rejected.

It is possible that Ramirez could make it through waivers next month. The outfielder is currently on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 17 for a right calf strain.

7/31 11:27: According to several sources, the prospects involved are Brett Wallach (son of Tim Wallach) and Kyle Smit

7/31 11:14: Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports confirms the deal. He says the Dodgers get LIlly and Theriot for DeWitt, two Minor League pitchers and $2.5 million. (Bob Nightengale of USA Today clarifies that the $2.5 million is from the Cubs to the Dodgers. It was originally going to be $1 million, but was upped to $2.5 million.)

7/31 11:07: Chris DeLuca of the Chicago Sun-Times says the deal is complete. Still awaiting details.

7/31 10:57: The Dodgers are on the verge of acquiring Lilly and Theriot, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.

7/31 10:37: According to a source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Dodgers are still trying to make the Lilly/Theriot deal work. Blake DeWitt and one other would go to the Cubs if it happens.

7/31 09:33: The Lilly deal between the Dodgers and Cubs is trending positive. Theriot could still be in play. The deal is not done yet, but the teams are working hard, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.

7/31 07:43: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says the Dodgers and Cubs are discussing Lilly, but Chicago needs to pay much or all of the  $4 million left on Lilly’s contract.

The Twins, Tigers, Mets and Yankees are unlikely to be going after Lilly.

7/30 22:39: Buster Olney of ESPN tweets, “Heard this: The Dodgers and Cubs are closing in on a Ted Lilly trade.”

Jayson Stark of ESPN tweets, “Update on Buster’s report: Unlikely #Cubs & #Dodgers get a Lilly deal done tonight, but source says moving in “positive” direction. #trades”

7/30 22:32: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports tweets, “Sources: #Cubs have multiple proposals out on Lilly. #Dodgers in, but still apart on $$$/players.”

7/30 19:50: Jayson Stark of ESPN tweets, “Sources say only real gap separating #Dodgers & #Cubs on Lilly is amount of $ Cubs would take, but could be enough to prevent a deal”

7/30 19:33: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Dodgers remain active on Lilly. They seem intent on getting Lilly or Maholm.

7/30 16:18: Jon Paul Morosi says the San Diego Padres are not involved in the Ted Lilly bidding.

7/30 12:44: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports tweets, “#Dodgers more inclined to get just Lilly than both Lilly and Theriot from #Cubs. Also looking at #Pirates‘ [Paul] Maholm, relievers.”

7/30 12:22: Jayson Stark of ESPN says the Detroit Tigers aren’t out on Lilly.

7/30 12:06: Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times tweets, “Dodgers talking to Cubs about a multi-player deal that would include Lilly and a position player (probably not Theriot).”

7/30 11:08: According to sources close to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, there may be two deals in play: one involving a package that would send Lilly and Theriot to the Dodgers and one that would involve Lilly alone.

7/30 07:34: What do you if your the Dodgers and you are 7 games back in your division?  You look at making a huge trade.  The Dodgers are talking to the Cubs about a trade for both left-hander Ted Lilly and second baseman Ryan Theriot, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.

It is not known whether a deal is close. The Cubs almost certainly would need to include cash to cover part of the nearly $5 million combined that Lilly and Theriot are owed for the rest of the season.

Lilly is a free agent at the end of the season. Theriot is under club control for two additional years.

7/30 12:59: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports tweets,  “#Mets still talking with #RedSox about R. Ramirez.”

7/30 11:10: Alex Speier of WEEI says the Red Sox have expressed willingness to move some of the relievers on their roster. The team has made Ramon Ramirez available. They were seeking a Major League return, but now are willing to move Ramirez for a prospect.

7/30 11:00: Ken Rosenthal says the Red Sox have inquired about two left-handed relievers – Colorado Rockies Joe Beimel and Washington Nationals Sean Burnett. The Rockies asking price is too high.

7/30 23:37: Buster Olney of ESPN says that the Boston Red Sox will move starting pitcher Felix Dubront to the bullpen. The team is in need of outfield and bullpen depth, but he notes that may be hard to come by in a market where there is little relief or outfield help to choose from. The Red Sox may make a smaller deal before the deadline, or they may wait until the August waiver period to make a deal.

Over the last couple days the Red Sox have been making inquiries about relief pitching. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said the team checked in with the Milwaukee Brewers about the availability of right-handed relief pitcher and all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman.

The July 31st Trade Deadline wouldn’t be exciting unless the New York Yankees participated. The Yankees made a statement by acquiring Lance Berkman from the Houston Astros. There is a 24 hour window before the deal becomes official, but it is expected to be finalized without any problems.  Here are the events leading up to this:

7/31 10:43: Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says the deal is official.

7/30 16:03: Buster Olney of ESPN says the Astros are picking up a lot of money on this trade, and the Yankees won’t have to give up major prospects.

7/30 15:10: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets, “Deal is completed, Berkman consented to waive no-trade rights, just have to wait 24 hrs for the technicality”

7/30 14:48: A source (via Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports )says, “Berkman gave approval earlier today, so everything should be OK. But official word would not be until Sat. aft.”. Rosenthal adds that the deal will be announced tomorrow likely.

In an earlier tweet, Rosenthal says, “#Yankees indeed moving quickly on Berkman, as others report. Team will NOT pick up 15M option as condition of deal; strictly a rental. #MLB

7/30 14:46: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets, “Rule is Berkman deal can’t be officially announced for 24 hrs after completed because the player (Berkman) has to waive 10-5 rights .” He adds that it’s more of a technicality.

7/30 14:08: Alyson Footer of MLB.com tweets, “Berkman said no matter what happens, he wants the opp. to come back to Astros next year. So a requirement if he was traded would be for the new team to NOT pick up his option. He’s the anti-Oswalt.”

7/30 14:03: Joel Sherman of the New York Post says a Berkman deal from the Astros to the Yankees is on the verge of completion.

7/30 13:00: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets, “#Yankees are definitely in for Lance Berkman, considering him seriously”

7/30 12:50: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweets “berkman one of many #yankees are looking at for offense. they find relief market dismal thus far.”

7/30 10:40: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports tweets that Berkman could be in play for the New York Yankees. Berkman is good friends with Andy Pettitte, and he would likely waive his no-trade clause for the Bronx Bombers.

7/30 09:08: Ed Price of AOL FanHouse tweets that there is a “buzz” about the Chicago White Sox going after Houston Astros Lance Berkman.

Yesterday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said the Astros might move their long-time first baseman. The White Sox are likely considering Berkman as a plan B if they cannot acquire Adam Dunn from the Washington Nationals.

One stipulation to note, Berkman has a no-trade clause in his contract, but Sherman says that he could be a lower-cost option for most teams that don’t like what the Washington Nationals may be asking for Dunn. Berkman has a $15 million team option for 2011, and he previously told Bernardo Fallas of the Houston Chronicle that he hasn’t gotten any indication that the Astros will pick it up. Read More→

According to a source close to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports, the Baltimore Orioles are not close to moving infielder Ty Wigginton, “but not all doors have been closed.”

Morosi wonders if the San Francsico Giants would make a play for Wigginton if they do not get Toronto Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista.

On Thursday, Morosi said the interest by the Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants in Baltimore Orioles infielder Ty Wigginton is cooling. However, he adds that there’s a 50/50 chances that the O’s could still move him.

The New York Yankees were in on Wigginton earlier this month, but recently dropped their interest in him.

Wigginton was recently suspended for an on-field altercation, but president of baseball operations, Andy MacPhail, doesn’t believe that would impact his trade value.
