Rumors for July, 2010

7/26 21:26: A source close to Rob Bradford of WEEI says the Red Sox and the Blue Jays aren’t a match in terms of making a deal for reliever Scott Downs.

The source says the dynamic could change before the July 31st trade deadline, but there is “nothing right now.”

Alex Speier of WEEI adds that the Blue Jays have aggressively been scouting Red Sox Single-A Minor Leaguer Roman Mendez.

7/26 16:45: Ian Browne of MLB.com says that Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona only has two relievers that he can truly count on – Jonathan Papelbon and Daniel Bard. The team would obviously like to add additional pitchers like Toronto Blue Jays’ Scott Downs, but the cost for relief help is too high right now. The price may come down as the trade deadline approaches on Saturday.

In exchange for a pitcher, the team is willing to part with infielder Mike Lowell. Lowell is doing well in the first three games of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. He’s batting .357 (5 for 14). He had attracted the attention of the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, but it appears that both of the teams may be headed in another directions.

Brown also says the Sox could be looking for a catcher since Jason Varitek’s return to the team is still uncertain. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said the Red Sox offered right-handed pitcher Ramon Ramirez to the Mets for catcher Rod Barajas until Barajas got hurt and went on the disabled list.

According to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the Arizona Diamondbacks would like to trade catcher Chris Snyder and reliever Chad Qualls. The team is also open to dealing first baseman Adam LaRoche and right-handed pitcher Edwin Jackson.

The Tampa Bay Rays have been interested in Qualls. The Mets had interest in Qualls too, but it is now known if they still are interested.

Earlier today, we heard via Buster Olney of ESPN that the Washington Nationals were interested in Jackson and have “made progress in their efforts” to acquire the Arizona pitcher.

“If we could get a player back that could help at the Major League level immediately as well as help restock the farm system we would listen,” Arizona Diamondbacks’ team president Derrick Hall said of a possible Jackson deal.

Earlier today Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said the Red Sox offered right-handed pitcher Ramon Ramirez to the Mets for catcher Rod Barajas until Barajas got hurt and went on the disabled list. A source close to Alex Speier of WEEI confirms that the Red Sox and Mets discussed a potential deal for Ramirez.

The source said the two sides discussed different scenarios (some including Barajas, and some not) in a potential trade, but the source indicated that the deal is “probably not going to happen at this point.”

Ramirez is 0-3 with a 4.69 ERA in 42 appearances for the Red Sox this season. Some clubs believe he could be more effective with a change of scenery.

Here’s the video of Tampa Bay Ray’s Matt Garza throwing the Tampa Bay Rays’ first no-hitter of their franchise history:

Garza faced the minimum 27 batters of the Detroit Tigers in the 5-0 victory. The only batter to reach base was a one-out second inning walk by Brennan Boesch. Congratulations Matt!

The pitching trade market is shrinking now that Dan Haren has been traded. The obvious big name starting pitcher that is left is Roy Oswalt, and there’s doubt whether he’ll be traded or not. Here is a running list of Oswalt rumors for Monday:

Oswalt will be willing to play in any region of the country if it meant he would be in a pennant race, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. “Location doesn’t matter,” Oswalt said.

Bernardo Fallas of the Houston Chronicle says Oswalt has no problem being traded to an East Coast team – it just has to be the right one. “That’s not an issue,” Oswalt told the Chronicle on Monday. “Like I’ve said from the beginning, it’s going to have to work for both of us.”

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN says Oswalt will not approve any trade unless his $16 million option for 2012 is picked up. Crasnick adds, “When Oswalt talked about “restructuring,” he meant he might be willing to defer a part of the money. But that was it.”

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweets, “#astros not anxious to trade brett myers apparently, since they expect oswalt to be gone and need someone. they should, tho.”

A source close to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says that Oswalt does not want to go to the Phillies in a trade (he has a no-trade clause). “I’d be surprised if Oswalt goes (anywhere). It sounds like both he and the Astros are difficult,” an AL executive said. Read More→

Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com says the Minnesota Twins are zeroing in on a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. The targets of the trade are unknown, but the Blue Jays are known to be shopping several of their pitchers, including relievers Scott Downs, Jason Frasor and Kevin Gregg and possibly starter Shaun Marcum.

Pelissero says the asking price for Downs in the past has been an elite prospects, and that may lower the chances of the Twins making the acquisition.

The left-hander Downs is making $4 million this season and has a 2.45 ERA. He’s particularly effective against left-handers. Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Phillies also had interest in the lefty. One thing to note is that Downs will likely be a Type-A free agent after the season.

Frasor, 32, is 3-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 42 appearances this season. He will become a free agent at the end of this year, and is being paid $2.65 million. Frasor will likely be a Type B free agent after the season

The 32-year-old Gregg is 0-4 with a 3.82 ERA and 22 saves. He’s making $2.75 million this year, and there are club options for 2011-12 ($2 million and $4.5 million respectively) with a $750,000 buyout.

Marcum, 28, is 9-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 19 starts this season. Marcum is making $850,000 this season.

Boston Red Sox third baseman, Mike Lowell, is doing well in the first three games of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. He’s batting .357 (5 for 14).

Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com says that despite his improved statistics, the two teams (the Rangers and Tigers) that have been most interested in Lowell appear to be headed in other directions.

The Texas Rangers are focused on acquiring Florida Marlins right-handed hitting infielder Jorge Cantu.

The Detroit Tigers are actively looking for bats since they lost Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen to the disabled list. The team sent two scouts to Pawtucket to get a look at Lowell, but a source with direct knowledge of the Tigers’ thinking said it’s unlikely that Detroit will deal for Lowell.

7/26 13:57: Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post says the Texas Rangers asked about Chris Volstad, but the Marlins are not interested.

7/26 13:26: Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post tweets, “#Marlins being asked about Chris Volstad, Ricky Nolasco, Leo Nunez but fish reluctant to deal any of them”

7/26 11:41: One source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the team is “confused” as to their next step. Rosenthal notes that the Marlins are not certain sellers since they are only 6 1/2 games back in the wild-card race.

A sign that the Marlins are “confused” is the team’s lack of desire to trade outfielder Cody Ross. Rosenthal says the team is likely to non-tender him. he’s currently making $4.45 million this season, and he will earn more in his final season of arbitration. Teams would non-tender a player or in other words not offer a player a contract by December if they do not want to pay what he may command in arbitration. If he is non-tendered he will become a free agent and may sign with any club at any price.

Florida is reaching a crucial point in their schedule with four games against the NL wild-card leading San Francisco Giants. If the team gets swept by San Francisco, it will likely mean the team will become sellers by July 31st. Read More→
