No deal appears imminent for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but manager Joe Torre is convinced that help will arrive by Saturday’s non-waiver Trade Deadline. Torre said the club is focused on about 10 pitchers.
“I have a sense we’ll do something,” said Torre. “Ned’s [General manager Ned Colletti] been talking to a number of clubs. We’re all thinking pitching, but not limiting it to pitching. My guess is we’ll do something. In my two years here, we have.”
Torre said he would welcome a starting or relief pitcher.
“It’s a toss-up for me,” Torre said.
It’s possible that the trade could occur before July 31. The team is in need of a starter for Saturday’s game, and Torre hinted to MLB.com that the pitcher could come from outside the organization.
“You can’t discount anybody,” Torre said. “We’ve talked about a lot of names.”
St. Louis Cardinals Rumors: Cards could acquire everyday player by Trade Deadline
Posted by: | Comments
GM John Mozeliak said the St. Louis Cardinals probably will not add a bench player by Saturday’s Trade Deadline, but he left open the possibility that the Cards could acquire an everyday player, according to MLB.com.
MLB.com says, “An everyday player, however, holds interest for the club. Mozeliak said that the return of David Freese from an ankle injury, whenever that happens, would not have a significant impact on the club’s shopping list.”
“I don’t feel it’s affecting it one way or another,” Mozeliak said. “Because we’re not looking at just some short-term band-aid. If we really were going to go that route, we should have done it, in hindsight, a month ago.”
The Cards would then have interested in adding a starting middle infielder – one that would be with the club beyond the 2010 season. Players that fit that mold would include Florida Marlins’ Dan Uggla and Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew.
Jeff Francoeur Trade Rumors: Mets outfielder wants to be in New York
Posted by: | CommentsOver the last few days, trade rumors have heated up regarding New York Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur being sent to the Kansas City Royals. At the time Francouer welcomed a trade if it meant more playing time for him.
“You’ve got to ask yourself, ‘If I’m playing once a week, how good am I going to be anyway?’ because I’ve never done that,” Francoeur said. “Some people have done that. I’m just going to show up every day and be ready to play and see what happens.”
Francouer’s mentality has since changed. According to Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com, Francouer said that the wants to be in New York and he like it there and enjoys playing. “It’s a crazy place to play,” Francoeur said, “but it’s a fun place to play.” Read More→
Looks like there may be a three-team trade in the works between the Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox. Yesterday, Jayson Stark of ESPN first brought up the possibility of such a trade.
According to a source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports the Nationals are trying to acquire the necessary starting pitcher to trade to the Diamondbacks in order to get starting pitcher Edwin Jackson. It’s likely the Nats will acquire this pitcher through a trade of Adam Dunn.
The White Sox have aggressively been trying to acquire Dunn from the Nationals, and if they do it will likely require a trade of right-handed pitcher Dan Hudson. Rosenthal says that the Nats could send Hudson or one of their own pitcher to the Dbacks for Jackson.
Omar Vizquel thinks Chicago White Sox should add another pitcher or hitter
Posted by: | Comments
Future Hall of Famer, Omar Vizquel of the Chicago White Sox, spoke out about improvements the Chicago White Sox should make before the Trade Deadline.
“I think we need to add something,” Vizquel said. “If it’s not another pitcher, probably it’s another hitter. This is a time where we really need to make a step towards getting better and to separate between the teams that are around, having a chance, and the teams that really need to go on to the playoffs.
“I guess the final cut is coming. This is the last time to make a change, and I think that with another guy on the team, we might secure the next step.”
The White Sox have been in a serious pursuit of Prince Fielder and Adam Dunn. General Manager, Kenny Williams, has recently said that he was confident that he would land one of the sluggers.
Chicago has also been laying the groundwork for adding a starting pitcher, but they may wait until the last minute to acquire a starter to replace the injured Jake Peavy.
In regard to Vizquel’s assessment, Guillen has no problem with freedom of speech on his team. Read More→
Seattle Mariners release RHP Joe Nelson
Posted by: | CommentsApproximately one month after the Seattle Mariners signed right handed relief pitcher Joe Nelson, the Seattle Mariners have released the veteran pitcher, according to the Pacific Coast League transaction page.
Nelson was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox on June 11. He contemplated retirement at the time.
Nelson, 35, has a 7-2 career record with 157 appearances and a 4.38 ERA in 152 innings pitched.
Minnesota Twins Rumors: Team eyes pitching before Trade Deadline
Posted by: | Comments
Kelly Thesier of MLB.com points out that the Minnesota Twins’ starting rotation posted a 1.06 ERA during their last turn, so the team may be focused on upgrading other parts before the July 31st Trade Deadline.
Earlier today, we heard that the Twins may be targeting Washington Nationals’ closer Matt Capps, but Thesier says the deal was deemed unlikely as it’s unclear if the Nationals are willing to deal Capps or what the cost might be.
Two starting pitchers that have popped up in Twins trade rumors are Houston Astros’ Roy Oswalt and Chicago Cubs’ Ted Lilly. Oswalts’ price tag may be too high for the small market Twins, and they may be on Lilly’s list of no-trade teams. Read More→
Roy Oswalt Rumors: Phillies remain top contender for Oswalt
Posted by: | Comments7/27 18:45: MLB.com says the Phillies remain the top contenders for Oswalt. According to sources, Oswalt would waive his no-trade clause to play in Philadelphia.
“Location doesn’t matter,” he said on Monday.
The report also says that Oswalt may not make the Phillies pick up his $16 million 2012 club option.
7/27 12:58: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweets, “Phillies and Dodgers appear to be most active pursuers of star Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt. Cardinals and Rangers interested”
7/27 01:10: According to a Major League source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports, the Texas Rangers revisted their Roy Oswalt discussions with the Houston Astros even after acquiring Cliff Lee.
Yes – you heard it right. The Texas Rangers tried for a one-two punch of Lee and Oswalt.
The source adds that the talks went nowhere and “there is not a match at all.” The players that the Astros were interested in were traded away in the Lee deal.
As always, the big problem with any deal involving the Rangers is their pending bankruptcy case. They will need permission from Major League Baseball, or a judge, to make significant changes to their payroll.
7/27 16:43: Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets, “2 things I heard today: 1) Giants still actively searching for a bat AND relief, tho market is tough. 2) As of this a.m. ….talks with Milwaukee regarding [Prince] Fielder or [Corey] Hart were “dead in the water.”
7/27 16:07: A Major League source close to Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports say the Giants are still pursuing Washington’s Josh Willingham, along with Kansas City’s Scott Podsednik and Jose Guillen, major-league sources say.
FOXSports adds that the Giants will face competition from the Braves for Willingham, but the Nats may keep him especially if they trade Adam Dunn.
7/26 21:47: Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star tweets, “Also multiple teams are tracking #Royals OF/DH Jose Guillen. Wouldn’t be surprised to see something pop there in next few days.”
7/26 19:43: Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says that the Kansas City Royals are “peddling” outfielder-designated hitter Jose Guillen, he suggests that the San Francisco Giants may consider Guillen if they can’t acquire Milwaukee Brewers’ Corey Hart or Toronto Blue Jays’ Jose Bautista.
The Giants had a scout on hand last week to watch Guillen. Guillen is known for not being a leader in the clubhouse, and it’s possible that he could hurt the Giants’ in the long-run if the team acquired him. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports added at the time that in addition to the Giants, the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres had interest in Guillen.
Earlier this month the San Francisco Giants and the Brewers were negotiating for Hart. The Giants were expected to trade left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez.
The San Francisco Giants, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox and Atlanta Braves have all been interested in MLB home run leader Bautista. The 29-year-old has 29 home runs this season. Bautista is signed through 2010 for $2.4 million.
