6/14 14:51: According to the Associated Press, the Cardinals have officially sign Jeff Suppan and plan to start him Tuesday night. Cardinals rookie right-handed pitcher Adam Ottavino was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
6/12 16:55: FOXSports Midwest tweets, “Cardinals impressed with Suppan’s side session saying his arm looked healthy. Plan is to sign him early next week and put him in rotation.” The team will need to make an adjustment to their 40-man roster when they officially sign Suppan.
6/10 13:06: According to the Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the St. Louis Cardinals have signed pitcher Jeff Suppan.
The Cardinals have been short of starting pitching with pitchers Brad Penny and Kyle Lohse on the disabled list.
Suppan was released by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week. The 35-year-old was in the final year of a four-year, $42 million contract. He has approximately $8.3 million left on his $12.5 million salary for this year. The Brewers also have to pay a $2 million buyout of a $12.75 club option for 2011. The Cardinals are responsible for the prorated portion of the Major League minimum (about $300,000).
Suppan was with the Cardinals from 2004-2006 where he compiled a 44-26 record with a 3.85 ERA.
