Roy Oswalt Rumors: What’s next for the Astros pitcher?
By
The Roy Oswalt trade rumors have died down this week. Maybe it’s because most executives were focused on the draft or maybe the Cliff Lee trade rumors have taken centerstage.
Today Buster Olney of ESPN said, “Heard this: There are no trade talks in the works involving Roy Oswalt.”
So the last we heard, the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels have at one point been rumored to be interested in the pitcher. Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on with those teams:
Tigers: The Tigers could go after Lee or Oswalt to improve the team’s 4.86 ERA for starting pitchers. The Tigers also need a left-hander, so they may pursue Lee over Oswalt.
Cardinals: Oswalt has told friends that he’d love to go to St. Louis, but unfortunatly the Cards lead the Majors in quality starts so they don’t necessarily need him, nor do the Astros have a desire to trade Oswalt to a division rival. The Cardinals also signed Jeff Suppan today, so don’t expect the Cards to be in chase unless they have serious problems with Brad Penny or Kyle Lohse coming off the DL.
Rangers: Two old friends of Oswalt say that Texas would be No. 1 on a very short list of AL teams. Texas is going through an ownership transition and the finances could prevent them from taking Oswalt’s large salary.
Dodgers: The McCourt divorce makes it hard for the team to absorb the nearly $31 million owed to Oswalt.
Nationals: “They’re the one team that would pay the whole freight on the contract,” an official of one contender said. Oswalt was recently quoted saying, “…They’ve (Washington) been playing well. They’ve got a good offensive club.” You have to wonder if a couple more quality starts by phenom Stephen Strasburg would lead Oswalt to Washington.
Reds: Highly unlikely given that the Astros won’t trade him to a division rival.
Twins: The team lacks a true ace. Could be a good destination.
Braves: There is zero indication that the Braves are interested.
Mets: A friend of Oswalt said, “I can’t see that at all” when asked if he would be headed to Queens. The Mets are looking at starting pitching and have been rumored to be going after Orioles Kevin Millwood or Jake Westbrook of the Indians.
Angels: “This is the only team I see,” an official of one club said. “I know they have some money. They desperately need pitching. And they can afford him.” The rumors regarding the Angels have been surrounding Kendry Morales‘ replacement. The Angels also have bigger issues with the bullpen. If those two problems can work themselves out, they could potentially go after Oswalt.
