Update – Pittsburgh Pirates Rumors: Team to fire manager John Russell?
By6/16 11:10: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says sentiment for Russell exists within the organization that Russell should be dismissed. Some in the ownership group want to make changes to demonstrate to fans the franchise’ commitment to winning.
No change appears imminent, and Russell could last the entire season if the team shows improvement .
6/15 20:12: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Pittsburgh Pirates are holding internal discussions about the immediate future of manager John Russell. The Pirates are in the middle of a transition in which they are promoting several of their top prospects to the Major Leagues.
The promoted right-handed pitcher Brad Lincoln and outfielder Jose Tabata last week and the team promoted top prospect Pedro Alvarez today.
Team president Frank Coonelly denied the Pirates were discussing Russell’s future.
Buster Olney of ESPN also said that there is nothing to the speculation that the Pirates may change managers.
Russell is in his third season with the Pirates and has a 152-234 (.394) record. Bench coach Gary Varsho and Triple-A manager Frank Kremblas and Double-A manager Matt Walbeck would be the leading candidates to replace Russell on an interim basis.
Outside candidates include former Indians manager Eric Wedge and Cardinals bench coach Jose Oquendo.
