6/17 12:29: Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times says the team may need to acquire a shortstop via trade or free agency.
Hopefully, our injury situation isn’t long-term,” General Manager Tony Reagins said. “If it is, you’d probably have to look outside the organization.”
Candidates include Adam Everett (former Detroit Tigers), Cesar Izturis (Orioles), Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks), Ryan Theriot (Cubs), Omar Vizquel (White Sox).
6/17 03:23: Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com says the Angels are in need of infield help. The team has Maicer Izturis on the disabled list and Erick Aybar has a left knee injury.
The Boston Red Sox Mike Lowell would assist in the Angels’ depleted infield. Lowell has been a subject of trade rumors all season, but teams were reluctant to take on his big salary and some may not have the confidence in Lowell since he has not regularly been playing.
The A’s recently designated Jake Fox for assignment. Would the A’s trade Fox, a catcher and first baseman, to a division rival? The Angels could wait until Fox is released to make a move on him.
Another option is Akinori Iwamura of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates recently designated Iwamura for assignment and have asked him to accept a demotion to Triple-A. Maybe the Angels and Pirates could work out a deal.
Saxon says the Angels are not in spending mode, so the team that trades the expensive player will have to eat up a lot of his salary.
