According to John Hickely of MLB Fanhouse, Ken Griffey Jr. is retiring.
Sources says Griffey, who didn’t report to Safeco Field for the Mariner’s game against the Minnesota Twins is saying “it’s over.”
Griffey has been getting much playing time lately. He’s only had seven at-bats since May 18.
Jack Zduriencik, GM of the Mariners said (via Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports), “This is a sad day for the Mariners. It is rare in this game when you get an opportunity to reunite a player and a team. We feel honored that Ken was able to end his career where it began, here in Seattle.”
Griffey will retire with 630 home runs, 1836 RBIs, a .284 batting average and .370 on-base percentage in 22 seasons with the Mariners, Reds and White Sox.
