Guinness to honor Tomoaki Kanemoto’s record of 1492 consecutive games without missing an inning
ByThe Japan Times says Guiness World Records Ltd., will honor Hanshin Tigers outfielder Tomoaki Kanemoto’s Japanese baseball record streak of playing in 1,492 consecutive games without missing an inning.
Kanemoto, 42, will receive a certificate from Guinness before a game at Koshien Stadium on June 29 against the Chunichi Dragons.
“I don’t know how I’m going to feel until I look at the certificate,” Kanemoto said at a news conference. “I have mixed feelings. I kind of feel honored and strange at the same time.”
The streak began on July 21, 1999 and ended April 18 this year because of a right shoulder injury.
Major League Baseball’s Cal Ripken Jr. had a 903 consecutive game streak without missing an inning – a record that Kanemoto surpassed.
Kanemoto still has a consecutive game streak. According to the Daily Yomiuri Online, his consecutive game streak is at 1,678.
Teams in the Nippon Professional Baseball League play 144 regular season games per year. If Kanemoto continues his pace, he’ll break the Ripken’s record of 2,632 games at the beginning of the 2017 season at the age of 49. Good luck!
