GQ Magazine’s top 10 list of Major League Baseball’s fattest men

By Allan

GQ Magazine went in search of the fattest men in Major League Baseball and created the Rich Garces cup – awarded to the tubbiest player in the game.  The winner?  C.C. Sabathia of the New York Yankees.

The name on the Cup is a tribute to the retired, journeyman reliever, who weighed 255 pounds in his final season with the Red Sox. Here’s the list of the Top 10 huskiest guys on the diamond:

  1. Pablo Sandoval (5′11″, 245 lb): For his roundish looks and surprising agility, teammate Barry Zito gave Sandoval the nickname “Kung-Fu Panda.”
  2. Bengie Molina : Ripped straight off his Wikipedia entry: “At 5′11″ and weighing 225 pounds, Molina is regarded as one of the slowest baserunners in the game.”
  3. Dennys Reyes (6′3″, 246 lb): With a first name like his and a waistline like that, the “Grand Slam breakfast” jokes are just too easy.
  4. Bobby Jenks (6′3″, 270 lb): During the 2005 World Series, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillén signaled Jenks from the bullpen by holding his arms wide apart, as if to say, “Send out the fat one.” This actually happened.
  5. Tommy Hunter (6′3″, 255 lb): The Texas Rangers recently hired a dietitian to healthy up the clubroom’s postgame spread. Cut those starches, Tommy!
  6. Ryan Howard (6′4″ 230 lb): Though it seems as if he’s tightened his belt this year, fans have no complaints when it comes to Howard’s girth—or his $25-million-a-year slugging numbers.
  7. David Ortiz (6′4″, 230 lb): He slimmed down pretty nicely in preparation for this season, but we still won’t be calling him Petite Papi anytime soon. (The thinner he gets, the worse he hits—sort of like a fat Samson.)
  8. Jonathan Broxton (6′4″): At 295 pounds, with a fastball that has topped 100 on the more promiscuous radar guns, Broxton is a living lesson on momentum.
  9. Prince Fielder (6′0″ 260 lb): Despite starring with his father in a McDonald’s commercial at the age of 10, Prince (a second-generation fattest-man-in-baseball nominee) actually became a vegetarian in 2008; fried Twinkies are vegetarian, right?
  10. C.C. Sabathia (winner): At 6 foot 7 and 309 pounds, CC is a living counterpoint to the fashion concept that pinstripes are slimming.
