Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria gives gift to Phillies Roy Halladay

By Allan

Florida Marlins LogoOn Sunday, Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria gave pitcher Roy Halladay the pitching rubber used for his perfect game.

“It was a moment in history, which we needed to recognize,” Loria said after meeting privately with Halladay. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s the other guy. You have to respect the game.”

Loria is known for giving gifts to his players to commemorate an event:

• Gave Luis Castillo a St. Christopher’s medal blessed by the Pope after the player’s 35-game hitting streak in 2002.

• Gave every Marlin a commemorative gold coin after Anibal Sanchez’s no-hitter in 2006.

• Gave Hanley Ramirez a diamond-studded pendant for winning the batting crown last season.

• Gave manager Jack McKeon a new Mercedes-Benz after guiding the Marlins to the World Series title in 2003.

“Special occasions call for special measures,” Loria said.
