A.J. Pierzynski Trade Rumors: Open to going to contender
By
Scott Merkin of MLB.com says that the Chicago White Sox and their catcher A.J. Pierzynski would consider consenting to a trade.
“Obviously, if the White Sox aren’t where we want to be and a team has a chance for the playoffs and to win the World Series and they come and say, ‘Hey, we need a catcher,’ it would be hard to say no to that,” Pierzynski said. “How would you go about that? That’s something [where] my love for Chicago and this organization would be a deciding factor, but it’s hard as a player to say no.
Pierzynski is a free agent after this season, and can be traded without his consent until June 14. On June 14, his 10-and-5 veto rights kicks. Essentially, if a player has 10 years of Major League experience and is on the same team for five straight years he has no-trade veto power.
“Look at Jim [Thome] and what he went to last year. You have an opportunity to go somewhere and win, if it’s not going to work out here. I hope it works out here, first and foremost. I would like to stay here for a long time.”
There was talk over the weekend that Pierzynski would be happy to consent to a trade if the White Sox asked him in order to get youngster Tyler Flowers more playing time.
Even if Pierzynski doesn’t get traded by the July 31st deadline his salary is high enough that he will likely clear waivers in August and could be dealt then.
